India has emerged as Thailand’s third-largest tourist market, attracting a record-breaking 2.1 million Indian visitors in 2024. This milestone marks a nearly 30 percent surge from 2023, surpassing pre-pandemic levels. Moreover, it signals a significant shift in regional travel trends.
Reports confirm that Thailand welcomed a total of 35 million international visitors in 2024. Specifically, tourism generated THB 1.8 trillion (USD 52 billion) in revenue. This further solidifies the country’s position as a global travel hotspot.
Also in 2024, Thais made 197.53 trips locally, spending THB 952.77 billion. In addition, over the last week of December 2024, 943,269 travelers visited Thailand. This was significantly higher than statistics in 2020.
How India Boosts Thai Tourism
Travelers can attribute this growth to Thailand’s visa-free policy for Indian travelers, introduced in November 2023. Initially set for six months, the policy proved to be a game-changer, encouraging Indian tourists to visit Thailand. By simplifying travel processes, the visa-free initiative has made Thailand a top choice for Indian vacationers.
This policy didn’t just boost arrival numbers but also strengthened Thailand’s economy. With their high spending on shopping, dining, and luxury experiences, Indian tourists have contributed significantly to local businesses.
In particular, the hospitality sector saw increased demand. Specifically, cultural attractions like Bangkok’s Grand Palace and Phuket’s beaches experienced an influx of Indian visitors.
Regional Growth
Thailand isn’t the only country reaping the benefits of Indian tourists. Other Southeast Asian nations such as Malaysia and Vietnam have also reported surges in Indian arrivals.
Specficially, Malaysia welcomed over 1 million Indian tourists between January and November 2024. Notably, this marked a 72 percent increase from 2023.
Meanwhile, Vietnam saw India become its sixth-largest tourist source, further highlighting the region’s appeal to Indian travelers.
However, Thailand’s success in capturing the Indian tourist market stems largely from its targeted policies and extensive promotion in India. Collaborations with Indian travel agencies and Bollywood stars, in particular, helped position Thailand as a preferred destination. Additionally, Thai Airways increased direct flights from major Indian cities, making travel easier and faster.
The cultural exchange between India and Thailand has also deepened. Indian tourists bring energy to Thailand’s streets. Meanwhile, Thai cuisine and traditions continue to gain appreciation among Indian travelers. This strengthens ties between the two nations and enhances the tourism experience on both sides.
Future Outlook
Looking ahead, Thailand is well-positioned to sustain this momentum. Potentially extending the visa-free policy could attract even more visitors from India. Furthermore, Thailand’s diverse offerings, from wellness retreats to adventure activities, ensure its lasting appeal to Indian travelers.
Thailand has big plans for 2025 under its “Amazing Thailand Grand Tourism and Sports Year” campaign. The government hopes to receive 40 million international visitors, with a target revenue of THB 2.23 trillion.
With regional competitors also vying for Indian travelers, Thailand must continue innovating to maintain its edge. Nevertheless, the thriving India-Thailand tourism relationship hints at even greater opportunities in the future.
