An F1 street race in Bangkok would be advantageous for Thailand’s economy, promoting the country as a top-tier motorsport destination.
Thailand is eyeing to host a Formula One (F1) street race in Bangkok in 2028. Following a meeting between Thai Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra and F1 CEO Stefano Domenicali, the Land of Smiles is gearing up to make the race happen.
Domenicali F1 Talks Outcome
On March 18, Shinawatra met with Domenicali to discuss bringing an F1 race to Thailand. The discussion, which took place in Bangkok, focused on the feasibility of hosting a Grand Prix street circuit event. Following the meeting, the Thai government announced plans to conduct a detailed study on the race’s impact and logistics.
Domenicali expressed enthusiasm about the proposal. He acknowledged Thailand’s growing interest in motorsports and its potential as an F1 destination.
“I am looking forward to continuing our discussions in the weeks and months ahead,” he said.
Meanwhile, the Thai government remains optimistic, viewing this event as a major step toward boosting tourism and economic growth.
“I believe that all Thai people will benefit from organizing this event, whether it is large-scale infrastructure investment, job creation, new income generation, and importing new technologies and innovations,” Shinawatra said.
“I am confident that this project will be successful. It is another important opportunity for the country to organize a world-class event,” she added.
Gov’t Backs F1 Feasibility Study
Thailand is serious about hosting F1, and a feasibility study will assess the race’s financial and logistical viability. The study will examine potential race routes, infrastructure upgrades, and estimated costs. Officials will also consider the economic benefits, including job creation and increased tourism.
Additionally, the study will explore environmental concerns and traffic management strategies. Bangkok’s bustling streets pose challenges, but the government is confident in finding solutions. With a clear plan, Thailand aims to join the ranks of prestigious F1 hosts like Monaco and Singapore.
Plans for an F1 Grand Prix
An F1 street circuit could create an exciting urban backdrop for Bangkok. City officials are evaluating possible routes that highlight Thailand’s landmarks while ensuring a smooth racing experience.
Thailand has one FIA (Federation Internationale de l’Automobile) accredited track in the city of Buriram. Currently, it hosts a leg of the MotoGP motorcycling world championships. But the proposed F1 street circuit will be in Bangkok.
Hosting a street race comes with challenges. For instance, managing traffic congestion and ensuring safety are key priorities. Authorities will need to implement strict regulations, upgrade infrastructure, and coordinate with international racing officials. If successful, Bangkok could offer fans a thrilling high-speed event in the heart of the city.
Economic and Tourism Boost Expected
An F1 race in Thailand would attract thousands of visitors, boosting tourism and business opportunities. Moreover, the event could generate millions in revenue while promoting Thailand as a top-tier motorsport destination.
Luxury hotels, restaurants, and retail businesses would benefit from an influx of international tourists. Moreover, motorsports enthusiasts from around the world would flock to Bangkok. Hosting F1 would also encourage local investment in sports infrastructure and advanced technology.
